Building on the hugely successful Response Spectra Technical Seminar 2007, CSCE Vancouver Section proudly presents the Time History Analysis Workshop in the same format and as an extension to the Response Spectra Technical Seminar. With the help of real-world case studies of Buildings and Bridge Structures, this workshop covers both linear and non-linear Time History Analysis and the use of time history in preparation for site-specific Response Spectra.
The workshop will present a roadmap for guiding the user through the important steps to effective use of time history analysis. The major steps are: obtaining appropriate input motions, modeling of the structure and soil, software options for analysis, and interpretation of results.
The seminar will enable both structural and geotechnical engineers to reach a greater appreciation and understanding of their complementary roles in time history analysis of structures.

On 30 September 2006, the southern span of the Concorde Bridge over Highway 19 in Laval, Quebec suddenly collapsed killing five people and injuring several others. The Province of Quebec appointed the Johnson Commission of Inquiry on 03 October 2006 to investigate the causes and recommend measures to reduce the risks of such failure in the future.
This National Lecture Tour (NLT) is sponsored by ACROW Bridges and being delivered by Jacques Marchand and Denis Mitchell who led the comprehensive multidisciplinary technical assessment for the Johnson Commission of Inquiry.
This NLT will present the main aspects and findings of the investigation techniques including detailed material and structural evaluation. This presentation focuses on the three primary technical causes of the failure of the south-east section of the structure. Implications of the work performed by the team of experts on code provisions and future maintenance of reinforced concrete structures will also be discussed.
FREE for CSCE members; $20 entry fee for non-members which can be carried towards the purchase of CSCE membership (light refreshements included)
CSCE Vancouver Section expects to see you on

This conference attracts the best of the bests in the geospatial industry including such leaders as Microsoft, Google, ESRI, and AutoDesk to interact with the Civil Engineering, Architect, and Urban Planning communities in Vancouver.
An unprecedented convergence is emerging with advanced technologies for geographic information, building design, and urban planning, namely, the BIM (Building Information Model), CAD (Computer Aided Design/Drawing) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
The forces driving such an integration include the emergence of the big search engines (e.g. Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth) to the need to provide better life cycle management (design, build, deploy, operate) of the information about our cities. Further, not just an eye-candy, but this integration will also be useful in assessing critical issues such as massing, thermal impact, and noise absorption/reflection and so forth for new structures or structural modifications. This new environment is also enabling collaborative design using online tools like Microsoft Virtual Earth and Google Earth. This convergence has profound implications for all aspects of urban design and urban management.
GeoWeb 2008 - Infrastructure: Local to Global, being held during 21-25 July 2008, will emphasize the BIM/CAD/GIS Integration and build towards GeoWeb 2009 - Cityscapes, which will focus more on the city and city modeling.

The conference provides an opportunity to present practical and multifaceted solutions that address the economic, environmental and social challenges associated with the construction and restoration of infrastructures. The conference will also provide a platform for productive exchanges between over 500 engineers, technicians, suppliers, researchers and decision-makers in the public and private sector from around the world. Conference attendees will be able to choose from approximately 300 technical presentations that will take place throughout the conference.
The theme of the conference, Partnership for Innovation, is an invitation to civil engineering materials industries (steel, aluminum, wood, concrete, composite materials and pavement) to collaborate with each other in order to foster innovation.
In June 2008, Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations will be in full swing, which makes this city the perfect place to host such an event.
The objective of this 1-day course is to provide consulting engineers, professionals, technicians, instructors and students with training on the design of aluminum structures as well as extensive information on the main properties of aluminum. This National Lecture Tour (NLT) series is sponsored byCANAM.
This course is based on the book Design of Aluminum Structures and is being delivered by the author of the book himself - Dr. Denis Beaulieu, Ph.D., ing., an acclaimed researcher and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Laval.
The book adopts a pragmatic approach and offers practicing engineers and technicians a practical tool for designing aluminum structures. It draws from the Canadian Standard CSA-S157-05, Strength Design in Aluminum and from other Canadian, American and European standards in order to broaden its contents.

This conference, held every 4-5 years is being sponsored by the Canadian Geotechnical Society, the Quebec Ministry for Public Safety, the Quebec Ministry of Transport, and Laval University. It provides a unique opportunity to look at causes and effects of various types of geohazards such as tsunamis, earthquakes, mass movements, inundations, coastal and river erosion, volcanism, etc. Even climatic events which may impact erosion or mass movements are very much part of the geohazards to be considered. This Conference provides a unique opportunity to network with scientists and engineers who may be working on different geohazards issues but that may be using similar approaches on various issues like process, survey techniques (LIDAR), hazard mapping using GIS protocols, slope stabilization etc.
The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) is co-sponsoring the 2008 Structures Congress. This Congress is being organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) under the banner CROSSING BORDERS in Vancouver on 24-26 April 2008. We hope to welcome you during the Congress.
Transport Canada, in collaboration with the Bureau of Intelligent Transportation Systems And Freight Security (BITSAFS) of the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia (UBC) is hosting a workshop on the Impacts and Challenges of Urban Goods Movement featuring industry and academic experts from across Canada, the U.S., and abroad.
The workshop will be held at the Sheraton Wall Center Hotel in Vancouver (Canada) on March 18-19, 2008. There will be a formal workshop on first day followed by a technical panel on the second day focussing specifically on how the private sector manages freight movement.
You are invited to participate in this workshop. Registration is free.
