Dale Bracewell, MASc, PEng was appointed Director of Olympic Transportation for the City of Vancouver in 2006 to lead the City's transportation planning and operations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Transportation planning for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games was a complex challenge compounded by venue security road closures. On a typical Games day, approximately 500,000 additional person trips were accommodated in the City of Vancouver.
The presentation will discuss how the Host City Olympic Transportation Plan was a clear winner for Vancouver in establishing a lasting sustainable transportation legacy for the City.

The massive Magnitude 8.8 Chile Earthquake of February 27, 2010 resulted in significant loss of lives and damage to civil and transportation infrastructure. It could have been worse. Chile is a modern South American country with a good awareness of their earthquake and tsunami risks and structural codes that reflect that. With a subduction zone just off shore very similar to ours in BC, this was a unique opportunity for our scientists and engineers to observe and learn.
The speakers: Dr. John Cassidy of the Geological Survey of Canada, Dr. Carlos Ventura of UBC, Sharlie Huffman of the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Adrian Wightman of BGC Engineering were members of the Canadian Association of Earthquake Engineering Reconnaissance Team that spent 7 days and drove over 2,000 km in Chile the week after the earthquake. They will present background on the similarities and differences between Chile and BC, their observations of the performance of the ground and the infrastructure and the lessons they learned for BC.
The presentation will include seismicity, bridges, buildings, and geotechnical aspects of the earthquake.

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) Vancouver Island Section,
Structural Engineers Association of BC (SEABC) Vancouver Island Branch, &
Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) Vancouver Island Chapter.
The Structural Engineers Association of BC (SEABC) is organizing a 2-day seminar on Soil Structure Interaction.
This seminar offers a guided tour through the various ways of accounting for soil-structure interaction (SSI) from analysis of the total soil-structure system to analysis of various approximate models of the system. The focus is on buildings and bridges, with both shallow and deep foundations. The seminar will highlight the benefits of including SSI analysis, from the perspective of improved understanding of actual system behaviour as well as improved efficiencies in structural designs that can be achieved.
This seminar is presented by SEABC and sponsored by the UBC Department of Civil Engineering and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE). Speakers include experts from the University of British Columbia, local firms, and Californian organisations.

This presentation will focus on using a systems approach in addressing the practical issues related to climate change and its impact on water resources management. The research on Upper Thames Basin with respect to the City of London, Ontario will be presented as a case study on the assessment of climate change impacts on municipal infrastructure.
This presentation will focus on two examples. The first example is aimed at answering the question: How do the expected paths of climate, environmental, and economic variables change when feedbacks between the economy and the environment are more fully modeled? The proposed approach provides for improved representations of the physical processes involved in the climate system and carbon cycle, and includes the socio-economic sectors. The second example will deal with the question: What are the impacts of climate change on water resources management on a local scale?
The presentation will be delivered by Dr. Slobodan P. Simonovic, Director of Engineering Studies at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, University of Western Ontario . He has over thirty years of research, teaching and consulting experience in water resources engineering and management. Dr. Simonovic has authored over 300 professional publications and one major textbook.

There have been increasing requests for using Chinese GB/T 1591-94 High Strength Low Alloy Structural Steels as alternatives to CSA G40.20/21 or ASTM structural steels. A question arises whether the Chinese steels are compatible with the North American structural steels. While there are many similarities between the steels of the different standards, there are subtle differences. In addition, there have been confusion and misinterpretations in the Chinese Standard. This talk will point out the differences, clarify the confusions and correctly interpret the key specifications of the Chinese Standard by comparing directly to the CSA standard. It will also point out some additional requirements that are needed to be addressed in purchasing of the Chinese steels as alternatives to the North American Standard steels.
In addition to our best efforts we religiously dedicate into organizing the events of our own initiation, regular or occassional, local or national or international, we also do our best to help other societies and organizations in their own efforts of the kind.
