Chile Earthquake of February 2010: Observations and Lessons for BC - Seminar, Victoria
1:00PM-4:00PM, Monday, 28 June 2010
CSCE Vancouver Section, in collaboration with the CSCE National and international partners, is offering a 3.5 day course on Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). This workshop was very well received in its previous offerings in various international locations.
The workshop will teach the participants the methods, techniques, and tools used to measure, analyze, and infer on ambient dynamic vibrations of structural members and assemblies in a hands-on manner with real-life applications.
The intended audience includes structural engineers in the practices of seismic, aerospace, and mechanical engineering. The half day at the end of the course consists of trips to field sites in the BC Lower Mainland.
A detailed explanation of the Operational Modal Analysis approach can be found in the organizing partner's website
The workshop will be held in Vancouver on Wednesday - Saturday, 27-30 October 2010.
We are presently in the planning phases - please stay tuned to this webpage for further updates.
The massive Magnitude 8.8 Chile Earthquake of February 27, 2010 resulted in significant loss of lives and damage to civil and transportation infrastructure. It could have been worse. Chile is a modern South American country with a good awareness of their earthquake and tsunami risks and structural codes that reflect that. With a subduction zone just off shore very similar to ours in BC, this was a unique opportunity for our scientists and engineers to observe and learn.
The speakers: Dr. John Cassidy of the Geological Survey of Canada, Dr. Carlos Ventura of UBC, Sharlie Huffman of the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Adrian Wightman of BGC Engineering were members of the Canadian Association of Earthquake Engineering Reconnaissance Team that spent 7 days and drove over 2,000 km in Chile the week after the earthquake. They will present background on the similarities and differences between Chile and BC, their observations of the performance of the ground and the infrastructure and the lessons they learned for BC.
The presentation will include seismicity, bridges, buildings, and geotechnical aspects of the earthquake.
